Standard Four-Hexagram Groups (Part 1) — Zheng Yi Xin Fa (Part 11)
By Ma Yi · Chen Tuan · Hu Yixuan
The four-hexagram group is the standard form of opposition: horizontally, subject-object inversion (time); vertically, Yin-Yang opposition (position). Four dimensions interwoven reveal the completeness of an event.
I. Tun (Birth-Throes) ↔ Meng (Obscurity) / Ding (Cauldron) ↔ Ge (Revolution)
The same founding — the pioneer sees "I am opening a difficult path" (Tun); the successor sees "I am still ignorant" (Meng). The same transformation — the new order builds with the cauldron (Ding); the old order is abolished by fire (Ge).
II. Xu (Waiting) ↔ Song (Conflict) / Jin (Advance) ↔ Ming Yi (Darkened Brightness)
The same feast — the host gives (Xu), the guest contends (Song). The same career — in success, brightness advances to court (Jin); in difficulty, brightness hides beneath the earth (Ming Yi).
III. Shi (Army) ↔ Bi (Union) / Tong Ren (Fellowship) ↔ Da You (Great Possession)
The same campaign — the general leads the troops (Shi), the troops follow and unite (Bi). In poverty, unite through fellowship (Tong Ren); in wealth, preside through great possession (Da You).
IV. Shi Ke (Biting Through) ↔ Bi (Adornment) / Jing (Well) ↔ Kun (Oppression)
Punishment breaks through (Shi Ke); culture adorns (Bi). The well nourishes constantly (Jing); oppression exhausts resources (Kun).
V. Bo (Peeling) ↔ Fu (Return) / Guai (Resolution) ↔ Gou (Encounter)
Peeling reaches its extreme — return must follow. Resolution (five Yang deciding one Yin) gives way to Encounter (one Yin meeting five Yang).
VI. Xian (Feeling) ↔ Heng (Constancy) / Sun (Decrease) ↔ Yi (Increase)
Sensing outward leads to feeling (Xian); lasting inward leads to constancy (Heng). Decrease without ceasing must become increase; increase without ceasing must become decrease.
